For over a decade of travel through England, Austria, and France, I sampled more teas and pastries than I can count. Each region has its own unique way of presenting its delicacies, and all of them linger in my memories. The tradition of afternoon tea continued through our years living in Kenya and South Africa, and my children are still avid tea drinkers and love it when we find proper “tea biscuits” here in the States. But nothing compares to a full-on English “high tea,” which is a meal that includes savories as well as sweets, plus a variety of teas to complement the flavors of each item on the menu. And that’s what Coffee Corner is bringing to Enterprise on the evening of January 15 (starting at 7pm). It will be the first of what we hope will be many special teas and dining events that showcase local professional chefs and our own tea supplier, Deana at Lunation.
Our evening will include tiered pastry trays, piled high with delicate sandwiches, quiches, patés, cakes, cookies, and sweets. We will include gluten-free options as well, so if you can’t eat conventional pastries, fear not! We will have something for everyone. Best of all, our tea expert, Dee, will serve a flight of five different loose-leaf teas, all specially blended to pair with what is on the menu. Dee will explain how to correctly steep and enjoy your tea for optimum taste, and if you fall in love with a particular blend (or two!), you’ll be able to purchase the leaves directly from Dee or later at Lunation.
I will be setting our table with fine china from our family’s collection, mixing and matching colors and textures for a truly beautiful table. If you’ve always wanted to attend a proper English tea, this is your chance. It will be a perfect evening for moms and daughters, best friends, or couples to attend together. There’s nothing like the congeniality that comes from a leisurely tea shared around a beautiful table.
